The Complete Guide to Gay and Lesbian Weddings

From Publishers Weekly
Planning a same-sex wedding isn't all that different than planning a straight wedding. While some couples may choose a stereotypical biker bash or drag fest, David's emphasis is on traditional ceremonies and receptions, where same-sex cake toppers and greater emphasis on coordinated wedding attire may be the only hints that the marriage might not be recognized in all 50 states. The guide provides the usual checklists and common-sense wedding advice ("never hire a caterer-no matter what-without tasting the food first"). But its most unique-and therefore most useful-aspects deal with the challenges specific to same sex couples, such as hiring an attorney to navigate state laws that deal with partnerships; a (more...)

Will & Right: Religion, Politics and Gay Marriage

On February 24th, 2004 President George W. Bush announced his support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Three days later in response to the President's words and inspired by events in Massachusetts, Village of New Paltz Mayor, Jason West, began solemnizing same-sex marriages in Upstate NY. Will & Right takes a deeper look into those fighting for equality and the effects it has on individuals, family values and the nation. During the course of shooting this film we were able to meet so many interesting people; People working very hard to gain the same rights and freedoms that other Americans have. Actor/Activist Harvey Fierstein provided an interview as only he can, and many couples welcomed us into t (more...)

Civil Wars: The Battle for Gay Marriage

From Publishers Weekly
In this gripping piece of journalistic history, Moats chronicles the battle over gay marriage in Vermont, which culminated in 2000 with the first state law allowing gay civil unions. Moats, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his editorials in the Rutland Chronicle supporting the law, brings a balanced perspective and an urgency to the judicial and legislative drama, which registers on a personal scale. His goal is to answer the following question, which he poses in the prologue: "How did such a thing happen in Vermont?" The result is a local history that remains an important contribution to the history of civil rights in the United States. Vermont itself is the hero of this book, and Moats provides a deft and b (more...)

When Gay People Get Married: What Happens When Societies Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

From Publishers Weekly
While the summer of 2008 may have been the summer of love for American same-sex couples, as thousands flocked to California for marriage licenses, the summer of 2009 may go down in history as a time of profound contention and confusion over Proposition 8, which revoked those couples' right to marry. Still, as Badgett, the research director of the Williams Institute for Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy at UCLA, argues, the transformation of the policy landscape for gays and lesbians was nothing short of remarkable, considering the very real possibility of a constitutional amendment to ban it just a few years earlier. Despite her optimism about gay unions, however, Badgett sets out to examine their (more...)

Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People's Right to Marry

From Publishers Weekly
A nationally renowned attorney and director of Freedom to Marry, Wolfson hails the movement for marriage equality as "one of the first important civil rights campaigns of the 21st century" and grounds support for it within the logic of the long-established protest traditions in U.S. history: abolition, the women's suffrage movement and the racial equality movements of the 1950s and '60s. Unlike those who support gay marriage as a way to regulate what they see as the self-destructive sexual practices of homosexuals (David Brooks, Jonathan Rauch, Andrew Sullivan), Wolfson sidelines the issue of morality and discusses the right to marry as part of each citizen's inalienable claim to what the Declaration of I (more...)

Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage: Valuing All Families under the Law

From Publishers Weekly
With her freshman book, law professor Polikoff, who has taught, litigated and written about family law, civil procedure and sexuality for more than 30 years, deftly argues that the law's narrow definitions of family and marriage no longer work in today's society—not just for the LGBT community but the country at large. With many households following untraditional family models, Polikoff says, we need to look at ways the law can change to value all families beyond those created by marriage, including same and different-sexed, married and unmarried couples. Polikoff draws on legal history and contemporary (often eye-opening) court cases to make her argument. Topics such as inheritance, tax consequences, w (more...)
